1995 Ottoman Army Band - Mehter

The Mehter bands (Janissary Band of Music) were primarily military bands, and those under the command of generals included war drums over one meter in height known as "harbî kûs or kös". These were carried on camels, and playing them with sticks demanded great skill. The 17th century writer Evliya Çelebi wrote, ‘Each kûs is the size of a bathhouse dome. They are played on feast day nights and days and their sound is like thunder.’ During performances the kös drums were placed in a line on the ground in the center of the circle of musicians, and when marching they were loaded in pairs onto camels. The drummer rode and struck the drums to his right and left by turn. Each set of players had a leader known as "aga". The leader of the bass drum players was called the "basmehter aga", and the master of the entire band was called the "mehterbasi aga". All the agas and the çevgân players wore white turbans wound around a kavuk (cap), a red coat over a yellow robe and red trousers, a shawl wound around the waist and yellow leather shoes. The other musicians were similarly dressed, except that their kavuks and coats were dark blue.

2005 Mzansi Music Young Urban South Africa - Various Artists

"April 27th 2004 marked 10 years of democracy in South Africa. One of the benefits of post-94 South Africa is the freedom of expression. A freedom that, 20 years ago, was a luxury for black youths living in a country torn apart by apartheid. And the first place this freedom became visible was on the music scene in the form of an infectious, irresistible dance music called kwaito. In the early Nineties young black producers and DJ's, spurred on by the euphoria of a newly liberated South Africa, fused chanted lyrics (in Zulu and township slang), with imported house sounds and influences from South African eighties township pop as well as overseas hip-hop, R&B and Jamaican dancehall sounds. Whether it's young black owned record labels, youth radio stations like Y FM and fashion labels rooted in SA history and urban style - it's still the youth that are leading the way, just as they did in the anti- Apartheid struggle. Young South Africans created a brand new, funky, urban, globalised yet proudly South African cultural landscape. It started with Kwaito, but now ranges from Afrohouse to HipHop and spoken word poetry."

2003 Russendisco Hits - Various Artists

Back in the 1970's and 1980's, no one would have thought of Soviet Russia as a hotbed of happening alternative rock. And as this compilation demonstrates, there was a good reason for that perception: it was not, in fact, a hotbed of happening alternative rock. However, it was a place where bands managed, despite pervasive cultural oppression and state-sanctioned musical monotony, to build a small and surprisingly diverse underground dance-music scene. Compiled by emigred DJ's Yuri Gurzhy and Vladimir Kaminer, this album brings together a host of slightly cheesy but always quirkily charming selections by the likes of Siberia's Red Elvises, Distemper, the St. Petersburg Ska-Jazz Review and RotFront. Yes, most of this stuff is mostly fun for the kitsch factor, but the album is also a genuinely moving document of youth culture's ability to create weird and crazy music under even the most adverse conditions. Now, the Soviet Union is just an ilussion faded on time, Moscu's night seems not to be the same and the KGB's agents are not around your school anymore... but if you close your eyes and listen carefully, you'll be there again, living on the "opposing side of the american way of life"

Nice video from Russendisco... Enjoy it!

1960 Tambó - Tito Puente

Although reeds, brass, and even guitars are tossed in here and there to help create what the liner notes describe as "an exotic picture of tropical wildlife," the main focus is on percussion and some of the best tracks are the ones where the other orchestra members probably stepped out for a cup of Joe. One hesitates at the thought of pumping further caffeine into the timbale-pummelling Puente or his cohorts on congas, guiros, bongos, and assorted other percussion. Listeners who think a computer is necessary to play as fast as the beats would get in 90's jungle music had better check this man's hands out. Highlight track is, hands down, the unforgettable "Witchdoctor's Nightmare," a great way to start off the sounds at any party. Long life to Tito and this magic mix between "Easy Listening", "Exotica" & Afro cuban sounds!!!!

2006 Frequent Flyer - Ipanema

Brazilian music has always been a big influence for electronica artists (not to mention jazz and rock artists, as well, but that's a whole different album), and although Kinkysweet's not the first to compile something that shows that off (and certainly won't be the last), what they've released with Frequent Flyer: Ipanema is still a pretty good collection in its own right. More important is that the music's relaxing and warm, that the beat's steady, and that the whole thing is fun. On all counts, Frequent Flyer: Ipanema delivers.

2004 Frequent Flyer - Bombay

The Kinkysweet label continued its output of thematic mix CD's with the Frequent Flyer series, (Great Series, by the way) which supplanted the long-running Bargrooves series. These two-disc mixes are thematic in the sense that they're assembled with a particular locale in mind, namely a fashionable far-flung metropolis with a particular style of music to its credit. Predictably, the Bombay volume is characterized by various aspects of Indian music, though at its core this mix is firmly within the house music camp. For instance, instrumentation generally associated with Indian music is all over this volume, and a number of selections are full-on fusions. These Frequent Flyer mixes are great mood-setters, perfect for lazy afternoon daydreaming or late-night drink-sipping.

1995 Unforgettable - Johnny Hartman

Born in Chicago, Johnny began singing early on and performed while in Special Services in the Army. Hartman studied music while at college and made his professional debut in the mid-'40s, performing with Earl Hines and recording his first sides for Regent/Savoy. After Hine's band broke up later in 1947, Hartman moved to The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band and stayed for two years, recording a few additional sides for Mercury as well. During the late '60s and early '70s, he recorded a range of jazz and pop standards albums for ABC, Perception, and Blue Note. Hartman recorded sparingly during the 1970s, but returned with two albums recorded in 1980, one of which (Once in Every Life) earned a Grammy nomination just two years before his death in 1983. I don't know what do you think about this guy, but to me the nickname "THE VOICE" (Awarded by Frankie, should be -at least-, shared with Johnny. I'm very proud to present it.

2000 El baile Aleman - Señor Coconut y Su Conjunto

El Baile Aleman is that rare humor LP that succeeds on its musical merits as well. Beginning with a short vocal intro on which Señor Coconut (Actually the German DJ Uwe Schmidt
) himself introduces the record with appropriately comic English, El Baile Aleman presents remarkably faithful covers of Kraftwerk classics like Showroom Dummies, Trans Europe Express, The Robots, or Tour de France with the stark percussion and effects of the originals replaced by just slightly less rigid Latin rhythm presets. Let me tell you Monkey, the track number 10 (Music non stop) is f...... amazing!

"Fueled Space Age" for this compilacion, maybe isn't of the best already maded to homage to Esquivel, but anyways deserves the chance...plenty of nice sounds, like an pleasant soundtrack to back to the 60's. Therefore, must say... the quality sound is not very good, unfortunatelly. I specially recommends to listen the tracks number 1, 4 y 7.

1962 Latin-Esque - Esquivel

The King of "Space Age Bachelor music" is here!!! WHO????? Yes, sounds crazy. Esquivel, billed himself with a single name, actually enjoyed a long and varied career, of which his space age pop recordings were only a portion. Born in a small Mexican village, the pianist became a popular performer on a Mexican radio station, and studied briefly at Juilliard in New York.

Later (too much later) In the mid-'90s, Juan Garcia Esquivel enjoyed one of the most unexpected resurgences of popularity and hipness in the annals of 20th-century pop. The composer and arranger skirted the lines between lounge music, eccentric experimentalism, and stereo sound pioneer in the late '50s and early '60s on a series of albums aimed at the easy listening market. Both cheesy and goofily unpredictable, these records were forgotten by all for decades. With the space age pop exotica revival of the mid-'90s, however, Esquivel was not just being rediscovered, but was being championed as a cutting-edge innovator by certain segments of the hipper-than-thou alternative crowd.

This album has several musical and historical significant aspects, making it Esquivel's most desirable. First, it is one of only three or so truly great RCA Stereo Action ("The Sound Your Eyes Can Follow") albums. The music is deliberately scored for channel separation, but there is more to the stereo gimmickry than the arrangements. Not counting layered-track (multi-dubbing) efforts, Latin-Esque was the first album recorded with total stereo separation - two separate orchestras in two separate studios performed, connected by headphones. The results are fairly fantastic. This album was essential to the renaissance of Esquivel's popularity in the 1990's.

1963 The Rat Pack Live at the Sands - The Rat Pack

The so-called Rat Pack wasn't a group in the normal sense, but consisted of a loose confederation of actors, comedians, and singers lumped together by the media under that name in the early '60s. Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., joey Bishop and Peter Lawford formed the core of the Rat Pack, and they appeared together in several movies, including Robin and the Seven Hoods and the original Ocean's Eleven. Evil monkey says: "...One of the most beatiful & important discs that I've already presented for you. a delight to hear climbing on a tree..."

1975 Wish you were here - Pink Floyd REPOST

Pink Floyd followed the commercial breakthrough of Dark Side of The Moon with "Wish You Were Here", a loose concept album about and dedicated to their founding member Syd Barret. The record unfolds gradually, as the jazzy textures of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" reveal its melodic motif, and in its leisurely pace, the album shows itself to be a warmer record than its predecessor. Musically, it's arguably even more impressive. Welcome to the machine is among of my favorites post-modernism toughts always...

2000 Everything and Nothing - David Sylvian

Singer/songwriter David Sylvian's career spans a long and enigmatic scene of experimental rock and emotional restylings. Not one to fully absorb the conventional ways of a certain circuit, Sylvian is a realist musician. The new millennium brought the release of the double-disc Everything and Nothing, a reflection of Sylvian's previously unreleased older material. Sonically gorgeous with vocals comparable to Bryan Ferry, Everything and Nothing is a vastly expressive record of 29 tracks lost in the vaults of remixes, time, and creative changes; it is certainly a moving package of lush elevations and underrated wordplay. Henry Mancini has crafted memorable melodies and framed them with witty and inventive arrangements that in most cases, still sounds fresh today. This compilation from 2004 "Midnight, Moonlight & Magic: The Very Best of Henry Mancini" is a 23 song look at the master's work in films and on TV. It spans the years 1958 and 1972 and includes his most popular themes such as the sassy "Pink Panther Theme," the rocking "Peter Gunn," the sweet "Moon River," and the swinging "Baby Elephant Walk. definitelly IT'S A MUST.

2006 Swing for Modern Clubbing - G-Swing

It was a time when Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald were still just ordinary singers in an orchestra, (believe it) and names like Benny Goodman, Glenn Miller, Duke Ellington and Count Basie were the real stars. It was the swing era, a time when thousands of people danced to giant big bands on huge dancefloors. -It was a time when the word "swing" was on everyone's lips... 2007 Hello Mademoiselle - Stephane Pompougnac

Ok... what a beginning my god!!! here is Stephane. Meet him! At the age of 18, Stéphane Pompougnac made his DJ debut in clubs such as the Ubu, the Colony, and the Dream in Bordeaux, France, during the mid-'80s. After finishing his studies and national service, he spent six months in London before returning to Paris in 1992 where he mixed at clubs, such as Queen, Folies Pigalle, the Locomotive, and Privilege. Albert De Paname ostensibly first introduced him to Jean-Louis Costes although Pompougnac had worked as a waiter for Costes some ten years prior at Cafe Costes in Les Halles. This time, however, Costes offered Pompougnac a more coveted position: resident DJ at the famous Hotel Costes. He accepted and the history begins...

1999 Melanesian Choirs: Chants from the Thin Red Line

Many songs from this CD are featured in "The Thin Red Line" but only one is on the soundtrack. Thankfully there is an answer, which is this CD. These tunes are pure heaven. They are haunting choir pieces that need to be experienced. It must be heard if you like World Music!!!

1999 The Thin Red Line - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack

Hans Zimmer, trying to avoid war-movie clichés, accompanies the dramatized carnage at Guadalcanal with a weepy and wistful score. The music, like the real soldier's internal war on this great film, is more introspective, sensitive, melancholy and sad, like all the wars are. It's a soundtrack where you can "see the idea" without even having seen the movie. Great work!
